Chesterfield Township police are investigating a three-car accident involving a sheriff's patrol car late Wednesday at the St. Clair County-Macomb County border, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office.
At approximately, 11:15 p.m., a St. Clair County Sheriff's patrol vehicle was traveling westbound on Marine City Highway en route to Interstate 94.
"The car was heading through the intersection of County Line Road when a vehicle heading eastbound went into the turn lane, struck a vehicle from behind, then veered into the path of the patrol unit," the Sheriff's Office stated in a news release. "The patrol unit was sideswiped."
Uninjured, the deputies inside the car then checked on the occupants of the other two cars. They saw that the two men in the vehicle that struck them had a handgun, the Sheriff's Office said.
They placed the 26-year-old New Haven driver of the vehicle that hit the patrol car under arrest on suspicion of operating while intoxicated and carrying a concealed weapon. The passenger in that vehicle, a 27-year-old New Haven man, was arrested on an outstanding Friend of Court warrant, the Sheriff's Office said.
Both men were transported to Port Huron Hospital for treatment before they were lodged at the Intervention and Detention Center. The driver did not suffer known injuries and was not taken to the hospital.
Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, Chesterfield Township police, Ira Township Fire and Rescue and Richmond-Lenox EMS assisted at the scene of the crash.
Since the crash was at the intersection of St. Clair and Macomb counties and the townships of Casco, Ira, Lenox and Chesterfield Township and also involved a St. Clair County Sheriff’s patrol car, Chesterfield Township police conducted the crash report investigation.
