AUBURN HILLS – Anchor Bay High School's John Bourcier and L'Anse Creuse North's Gideon Gaiter both took sixth places at the weekend wrestling state tournament at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Bourcier, competing at the 160-pound class, was one of four Anchor Bay wrestlers to make the state finals. He lost his final two matches of the weekend, the first to Shon Powell of Brother Rice and the next to Nick Mason of Detroit Catholic Central -- especially tough because he beat Mason in a 7-2 decision in the first round of the tournament.

Powell hit a takedown with only nine seconds left in the first round against Bourcier, and hit another in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Bourcier made things close in the third round, but ran out of time and lost on a 6-4 decision.

Gaiter's nemisis of the tournament was Said Youssef, who defeated Gaiter 7-6 by decision in the first round on Thursday, and later sent Gaiter to the fifth-place match. Youssef was defeated in the consolation title match by Rochester's Dean Vetesse, while Gaiter lost to Rocco Borg of Oxford, in a 5-3 decision.

Anchor Bay's other three qualifiers – Zach VanOverbeke, Eric Rybarz and John Yank – were all eliminated early on, with Rybarz losing to three-time state champion Malik Amine in the quarterfinals at 135 pounds.

L'Anse Creuse North's Eric Maniaci and LaMonte Baker also competed, with Baker losing his first two matches and Maniaci winning the opening round but then losing in the quarterfinals and in his third match.
