Bad Brad's BBQ Brings Heat to Shelby

The New Baltimore restaurant plans to open its second location in late January.

A popular New Baltimore restaurant is cooking up plans to open a second location in Shelby Township.

Bad Brad's BBQ will move to the property of former Hoops Sports and Spirits on 23 Mile between Mound and Van Dyke. The business' second restaurant is slated to open in late January once extensive renovations are complete.

Tearing down about 90 percent of the structure will pave way for Bad Brad's to create a rustic yet refined atmosphere from scratch, co-owner Mike Pollard said Thursday.

Pollard passed the building during a drive and immediately envisioned it as a Bad Brad's.

“It’s been in negotiation for about eight months; we finally got our hands on it in July of this year," Pollard said. "What we like about it is it's a free-standing building. It's actually in the woods a little bit."

A 140-year oak tree that will loom over the signature Bad Brad's patio was a major selling point, he said.

Shelby Expansion Takes Business West

Expanding the business to Shelby Township will ideally bring more patrons to the plate.

"It's just a way for us to reach more people," Pollard said. "New Baltimore is semi-secluded. You know, you got the lake to the east; everybody's coming from the west.”

Like the first location, a meat mural will be featured at the new restaurant. A wood-burning pizza oven, however, will broaden the menu in Shelby.

The business, which has a 50-member staff, will also hire about 100 employees. Applications will be accepted on-site at an undetermined time in January.

Macomb Township Gets Grilled

Bad Brad's BBQ also bought the building that housed All-Star BBQ at the corner of 22 Mile and Romeo Plank in Macomb Township.

“We will be using that as what we call a commissary kitchen, which will basically be a production kitchen/catering headquarters,” Pollard said.

That location, slated to be operational in January, will be closed to the public with the exception of scheduled catering pickups.

Bad Brad's took second place for BBQ on the 2011 Detroit A-List Winner List.

Regarding you new location in Shelby, you're hiring new staff, would you be open to hiring a bartender that isn't in her "20 something's"? I am older but have extensive bartending experience, but don't want to waste your time or mine if you're looking for younger staff. Thanks! and Good Luck with the new location!!!

It's my understanding that the Shelby Township location just had its preview night and grand openings usually follow pretty closely after. It should be anytime now, but no exact date has been released. I'll be sure to post something here when I hear something concrete!

I just called. They are having a friends and family preview over memorial weekend. If all goes well, they'll open the doors to the public the following week. No firm grand opening date has been set.
