Chesterfield Township Police Veteran Makes Passionate Plea Against Cuts
Sgt. Ed Colinas was among the police officers and residents who spoke before the Board of Trustees Tuesday night.
Chesterfield Township Police Sgt. Ed Colinas gave a heartfelt speech before the township board as layoffs were discussed.
Colinas was one of many people to express support for maintaining police staffing.
The board majority voted in favor of a moratorium on the staff reductions while they mull over potential solutions to combat a $1.9-million shortfall.

I say, on our New Board is a wolf in Sheeps clothing . Support the Police department. Let,s not pretend who is kidding who. I see right through Mr. Joseph and his puppet Cindy Berry. She has to always lean to him for reassurance . Remember Mr. Joseph stated before he was on the Board that "we will have to look at outside sources " which means Sheriff's Dept. Like I said "Sheep in wolf clothing .. or is it the way the wind blows MR. JOSEPH?????

If it wasn't for Trustee Joseph, we wouldn't have this 90 days to research a better way. I applaud him and the others who supported.

I think we need to look at Lovelock and Demeynck! They supposedly support the PD but Lovelock voted against looking into other options than layoffs and the only reason Demeynck voted for it was because he was put on the spot! If you remember, he wanted a very short time frame to look into options. Government doesn't work that fast and he knew it couldn't be done in 30 days. And if you want to talk about puppets, lets not forget Hartman and Bell!

Passionate Plea? Who cares? My grandmother could get up there and make a Passionate Plea against another tax increase but that doesn't change the fact that Chesterfield is going broke trying to pay for an overpriced police department (and all their perks and pensions) and that the sheriff is doing a great job in all surrounding communities.

This is a microcosm of the national debate we see right now coming out of Washington, especially from our President. You'd think that there is just no way to make due with less, ever. Never. Can't be done. Well guess what, your constituents are doing it each and every day. Our pay is stagnant, inflation is absolutely KILLING us each and every time we fill up or buy groceries, we have lost almost all of our benefits that not only take things from the income side of our balance sheet, they add them to the expense side!
Look, we're sorry you have to do with less. We do too! We find ways to make it work. We roll up our sleeves, we still pay our taxes, we still maintain our properties, but WE ARE TAPPED OUT. Find a way to make it work or we will find a more efficient entity to replace you. It's that simple.

The schools now public safety. We don't have enough police presence in this township as it is. I lived in Detroit and don't want to wait 2 hours plus for police if I need them like I did when I lived there. I also lived in Harrison Township before moving to Chesterfield and you can have the sheriff department they would patrol with one car during the night which did not give me a warm fuzzy feeling when I slept at night. Sheriff Hackel at the time came in with the classic bait and switch promising everything and giving nothing. I guess when you need a police officer and then want to complain when there are none around I guess you can say just doing more with less doesn't quit work in this instance.

Thats a load of crap. There is no way you will wait 2 plus hours after calling 911 in Chesterfield. Lies and scare tactics (you must be a Republician)
The last time I got pulled over (2 blocks from my house on Gratiot) was by a Macomb County Sheriff because they are everywhere (this is afterall Macomb County) born and raised in Detroit (Osborn class of 75) and they have fallen apart for totally different reasons (you're compairing apples to oranges)
All surrounding communities are patroled by the Sheriff with no problems or issues (for way less money) best thing that these communities did was contracting with the sheriff

I was not going to reply to you BloNog but.... No sir I am not a Republican. When you cut police jobs and do more with less you will be waiting longer for response. While there may not be to many problems in our surrounding communities why would you want to wait until there is and then scramble to fix a problem. Of course Detroit and Chesterfield are not comparable cities. We could go around and around all day but we obviously see things different. I just want to see a police officer sitting in front of my kids school, monitoring speed on my street, making sure my elderly mother does not have her purse snatched again at Meijer. I really personally would like to keep my local police for to many reasons to list here. Remember this is my opinion. We can always cut and do more with less but in my opinion to save a few bucks on my taxes they need to go back and figure out how to make it work. Oh and I do agree there is a little scare tactic involved this.
