A 52-year-old Eastpointe man died in an overnight accident in the 26 Mile area in Chesterfield Township, police said Monday morning.

Around 12:10 a.m. Monday, police responded to a 911 call from a homeowner who reported a 2006 Buick crashed into a ditch on the south side of 26 Mile road, just east of Scheuer. Police identified the driver as James Vanhevel who was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Detective Sgt. Deron Myers, no other vehicles were involved in the accident and no witnesses are known. Investigators say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
