New Baltimore held its annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony Monday in the city's downtown.

Local residents braved snowy and cold conditions Monday night while bringing in the holiday season at the annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony.

They gathered near a towering evergreen planted in the early 1980s that was donated by Phyllis Gabler in loving memory of her husband, Richard. Department of Public Works employees moved the tree from their New Baltimore property to the historic downtown and the fire department decorated it.

Anchor Bay Middle School North and Ashley Elementary students sang several Christmas songs before John Dupray of Bay-Rama told attendees about the tree donation and encouraged them to shop at downtown businesses during the event. Additionally, Dupray welcomed prospective volunteers to the nonprofit community organization, Bay-Rama, which hosted the tree-lighting and also puts on the summertime Fishfly Festival.

New Baltimore Mayor Larry Smith then led the crowd in the ceremonial tree-lighting festivities.

The event followed Chesterfield Township's tree-lighting ceremony Friday night on municipal grounds.

Very nice. I loved going when I lived in town. Have a bell with my name on it. :0)

It was cold, snowy and wet but worth it to see the looks on the kids faces when Santa got off the firetruck and walked through the crowd...
