Dozens of local moms will soon be primping in anticipation for the “Totally Awesome Mom Prom,” a 1980s-themed party aimed at raising money for New Haven Community schools.
The fundraiser, organized by New Haven’s Endeavour Elementary PTO, is set for 7 p.m.-midnight Friday, Feb. 24 at Salt River on 23 Mile Road.
PTO president Tammy McMaster started planning for the big night after seeing news coverage of a Mom Prom organized last year in Canton, a story that received national media attention.
“Our goal is to have a good time, raise funds and enjoy a hot meal with good friends,” McMaster said.
A $25 ticket gives women 18 years and older access to dinner, dancing, a cash bar, raffles, music provided by Super Charge Sound Station and a chance to be crowned prom queen.
For tickets, call 586-588-4594 by Feb. 17. About 50 tickets had been sold as of Tuesday, McMaster noted.
Proceeds will go toward supplies, such as books and glue, and will help fund the school’s annual carnival in June.
“We are putting on this event as a way for moms to have a good time and raise some funds for our PTO and the (New Haven) Education Foundation,” said McMaster, a mother of three children ages 7, 9 and 12. “Both organizations work hard to bring great things to our school district.”
McMaster said the PTO helps buy extra supplies not covered by the budget and works to reduce field trip costs. The education foundation gives grants to teachers to use for school projects and makes donations to school groups such as the New Haven Elementary student council.
“I am hoping the event will be lots of fun, good music, dancing and conversation,” McMaster said. “The ‘80s theme was chosen just as something fun to do. It’s not required to come with big hair and puffy sleeves, but it’s fun to play dress up even as a mom.”
