Professional Excellence: Sgt. Phil Neumeyer and K9 Bullet, Deputy Steve Kret, Sgt. Kevin Weldon, Deputy Gregory Tench, Chloe Symington. On Dec. 15, 2011, Symington, 13, was home early from school when she heard a loud knocking on the front door. Looking out her window she saw an unfamiliar van on the street and heard someone enter her home. She was able to see a man going through a drawer downstairs and immediately returned to her room to call 911. She hid under the bed and stayed on the line with the dispatcher, even as the first suspect came into her room. The suspects were leaving the house as deputies arrived. Tench and Kret gave chase on foot and then in a patrol car. Neumeyer and K9 Bullet began checking nearby yards and located one suspect, while Weldon found the second. A third suspect was later identified. He turned himself into police.

From the resident whose quick thinking saved the life of a neighbor to the deputy who went the extra mile to bring a drug dealer to justice, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham recognized the actions of these individuals and more at the ninth annual Sheriff's Recognition Awards ceremony Wednesday in Macomb Township.

"We don't produce a product, we provide a service," Wickersham said. "We can't give out bonuses, but we can give out awards and recognize good deeds."

More than 75 citizens and law enforcement officers were recognized for their lifesaving actions and professional excellence over the past year, while five individuals were named employee of year, dispatcher of the year, corrections deputy of the year, deputy of the year and command officer of the year.
