Chesterfield Township Man Charged With Kohl's Parking Lot Robbery

Marvin Lee Hopkins, 62, was staying at the Chesterfield Motor Inn at the time of the Thursday robbery in the nearby parking lot.

A 62-year-old Chesterfield Township man was charged Wednesday with armed robbery for holding up a woman in the Kohl's parking lot, police said.

Marvin Lee Hopkins faces one count of armed robbery for his alleged role in the Thursday afternoon incident in the department store lot. He was arraigned on the charge that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment upon conviction at 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore.

Hopkins, a registered sex offender, was staying at the nearby Chesterfield Motor Inn at the corner of 23 Mile Road and Gratiot at the time of the crime, township police said.

During the robbery around 12:25 p.m., a man approached a 55-year-old woman from behind as she placed her merchandise in her trunk, grabbed her by the arm and threatened to kill her if she didn't hand over her purse. He told her that he would "shoot her if she screamed,"  township Detective Sgt. Deron Myers said.

He did not show a weapon, but alluded to one by keeping his hand in his pocket. The woman gave him her purse and fled on foot toward the old Kmart store that now houses Spirit Halloween. The suspect was not immediately found as police scoured the area.

That same day, the victim reported to police that another man and a woman came to her house to return her purse. They told her they found it abandoned and brought it back to the address on her identification. They did not offer personal information while returning the purse, but detectives previously said they wanted to speak to them in case they could provide information that would assist their investigation.

On Wednesday, police said a tip led investigators to identify those individuals who returned the purse. Those people then led them to identify and charge Hopkins with the robbery.

Hopkins' record dates back to 1968 when he was convicted of assault with intent to rob while armed. He was then convicted of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in July 2010 in Macomb County, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections database.

Hopkins was placed on a $75,000 cash/surety bond for the Chesterfield Township crime and is being held in Macomb County Jail. He is scheduled for an Oct. 10 preliminary exam in the New Baltimore court.

I'm so sad that this happened. I, too, am a woman of that age that shops at Jo-Ann, PetCo and Kohls. I have always been super sensitive in those parking lots (any parking lot) but this just confirms that one cannot be too careful! I know the woman will never forget that feeling that her life is about to be a satistic. I hope with time the feeling of violation will pass. These slimy creeps just don't understand or care that they are not only taking a purse, they are taking the God given freedom to spend a day out shopping in peace.

He was a pretty good guy when he was sober but recently he relapsed and started doing drugs again. I feel for him and also for the victim. He's probably going to die behind bars. I'm glad he didn't physically hurt the victim, I find it all unfortunate.
