UPDATE: Ira Pedestrian Dies Following Crash
A New Baltimore driver crashed into four pedestrians Sunday night in Ira Township.
A 22-year-old Ira Township woman, Courtney Claus, died Monday night from injuries she sustained when she was struck by a vehicle Sunday night, police said Tuesday.
Claus had been in McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens.
Two other female pedestrians, ages 43 and 44, remain hospitalized. The other women's conditions were not made available by police Tuesday.
According to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office, the three women were walking from their homes in Hometown American Mobile Home Park and were headed to a store with a 1-year-old child in a stroller when a 50-year-old New Baltimore woman hit them. The driver told police she was unable to see them along the fog line before the accident on Bethuy Road north of Dixie Highway.
The victim was the mother of the infant and daughter of the 44-year-old pedestrian. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing at this time, police said.
NOTE: This story was updated at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to include the woman's name and her relationship to others injured in the accident.
