What Readers Are Saying About Impending Police Cuts in Chesterfield Township

As many as 14 police department layoffs are expected.

Readers reacted strongly Thursday to Chesterfield Township's impending police layoffs.

Township Supervisor Michael Lovelock told Patch as many as 14 layoffs would take place soon by seniority.

Among the comments on our Facebook page were:

  • Jen Orchard Headley: This STILL makes me sad! I am so disappointed in my fellow Chesterfield residents... *WHY* didn't you all vote YES???
  • Josephine Plodzik: We can't give what we don't have! All the government wants to do is take, take and take till there is no more to give! Remove your rights to protect yourself and remove those that help protect us...very sad!
  • Krystal Stone: I can't believe the millage didn't pass, the most important resource in a community is it's police, without it we are sitting ducks with crime on the rise! As it is there are too few, and they are under paid!

Hey Jen, why are you so sad????? The fire dept has to fight for a millage to pass every couple of years . Why would we pay on a millage that is perpetuity(no ending date) for the police dept? How many on the police dept are on medicals or ready to retire? The chief won't say........................hmmmm.

Like Josephine said, everyone wants more, more, more. More for Police, more for taxes, more for food, more for gas with the only people getting raises being the politicians, This just means we have to protect ourselves a little more.

I would have voted for the police millage if it was for a 5 year period. Hopefully, in that amount of time the area will experience some growth and an increased tax base. I can't vote for any increase that is not limited. It needs to be reviewed periodically.

This is not the voters fault for not passing an unrealistic millage. This is poor management of our taxes by the officials. Maybe we should layoff some trustees instead.

Jen, If I asked you to open your checkbook, put my name on it as payable to, sign a blank check without even putting a date on it- would you? That is exactly what Police Chief Smith and the previous board asked from the residents. That is why I voted no.
