What Would You Want Developed on Waterfront Land?

City officials are interested in buying Schmid Marina if grants can be obtained.

As New Baltimore tries to secure grants to scoop up a prime waterfront property, we ask readers to weigh in on what they would like to see along Anchor Bay.

Longtime Schmid Marina, which is currently operational and on the market, spans about 12 acres. It is listed on Remax for $5.9 million as "fantastic opportunity for lake and canal development" with potential for mixed-use developments, such as condos, restaurants and even houses.

City officials say they're seeking grant opportunities to potentially buy the land, but there are no specific plans for the property at this early stage.

Would love an outdoor pool for residents, and boat slips with a nice concrete boat launch site!

I would like to see restaurants, walking paths and good looking marinas along the water. Lets show off the water-front, more like Grosse Pointe, rather than blocking it: dress up the area!

I would like to see a boardwalk style shopping area with restaurants, boat slips & public docking. If you create an "attraction" accessable from land and water it should become our city's revenue generating crown jewel.

I would love to see a great area where our community could gather together. There are so many possibilities. This could generate income and could put New Baltimore on the "top of the heap" and could ultimately help to bring back our housing values.

While a small piece of the property might be affordable to buy and maintain and would enrich the community as public property, the city shouldn't consider buying this entire piece of high-priced, commercially viable property. The Schmid boys should be encouraged to maximize their return and develop this as a condo or other high-density housing development, which would bring much needed additional foot traffic to downtown NB.

I would like to know how the city will pay for the future cost of owing a marina. Even if they are able to get a grant for the purchase, the on going costs would be quite large. Policing, insurance and maintenance would be very expensive. Marinas have a very hard time paying for their day to day operations and our city has no experiance running that type of business. Any renovations to make the land some other attraction would add to the cost. As a taxpayer I don't want to take on a large debt that would be passed on to the taxpayers.
