Students at Green Elementary in Chesterfield Township got cozy for a cause. With a desire to help Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey, student council, kids, their families and local businesses have raised approximately $1,500 for the American Red Cross during "Slippers for Sandy." The fund-raiser started when Green kindergarten teacher Pam Olcese, a New Jersey native who lost her childhood home in Brielle, NJ in the storm, wanted to to give back with support of school administration. New Haven Community Schools announced kindergarten changes Monday for the next school year. The district, which stretches into Chesterfield Township, will move away from using paraprofessionals half of the day for full-day kindergarten. In effort to keep the aquatic center afloat, Anchor Bay School District is asking voters to approve a half-mill levy in May. Anchor Bay Schools will seek the three-year levy from district voters in a special election Tuesday, May 8, school officials announced this week. The tax is estimated to cost an average of about $30 each year for homeowners, bringing in a total of approximately $518,000 the first year. Dozens of local moms will soon be primping in anticipation for the “Totally Awesome Mom Prom,” a 1980s-themed party aimed at raising money for New Haven Community schools. The fundraiser, organized by New Haven’s Endeavour Elementary PTO, is set for 7 p.m.-midnight Friday, Feb. 24 at Salt River on 23 Mile Road. PTO president Tammy McMaster started planning for the big night after seeing news coverage of a Mom Prom organized last year in Canton, a story that received national media attention. “Our goal is to have a good time, raise funds and enjoy a hot meal with good friends,” McMaster said. …
Six Anchor Bay School District teachers opted for early retirements that were approved this month by the Board of Education. The buyouts are to save the district about $250,000, according to Anchor Bay Schools Business Director Kyle Anderson.  The district initially sought more interest in the early retirement option, but another buyout will not be offered at year end, Anderson said. Anchor Bay School District's decision to refinance outstanding debt will save taxpayers about $10 million, schools officials said Thursday. The Board of Education approved the resolution Tuesday night to move forward with financing 2012 refunding bonds worth about $34.3 million. The bonds will be used to refund a portion of the district's outstanding 2002 debt, school officials said. Anchor Bay School District officials honored 19 retirees Wednesday night for their service during a ceremony before the Board of Education meeting. "We have a lot of experienced people working for us and that is part of the reason our students become so successful," ABS Superintendent Leonard Woodside said. "And, I want to thank them for their years of service." Among the people honored were cafeteria cooks, bus drivers, and Naldrett Elementary Principal Kathy Markel. Anchor Bay School District invites parents Thursday to learn about  additional early childhood programs during an open house at MacDonald Elementary Early Childhood Center. For the second consecutive year, New Haven High School was named on the state's Persistently Lowest Achieving School list, according to the Michigan Department of Education's Friday announcement. The high school, which has about 370 students from New Haven and Macomb, Chesterfield, Lenox and Ray townships, was named after review of "student achievement over two years, academic improvement over three or four years; whether a school made Adequate Yearly Progress status over the past two years; and whether a school had a graduation rate below 60 percent for three years in a row," according to …
Anchor Bay School District parents and incoming kindergarten and Young 5 students learned about bus safety this week at district elementary schools. Children were given a book entitled Alexander Loves the Bus while parents and guardians watched an informational video and heard from staff members in the transportation department. Additionally, bus drivers took the kids and adults on a brief bus ride. Comerica Bank is hosting a school supply drive now through Aug. 19 throughout Michigan in conjunction with Operation: Kid Equip to help those children who are unable to purchase the proper or ample supplies.  The supplies will be donated to children in Michigan following the end of the drive, according to a press release, which is where Operation: Kid Equip, a non-profit Michigan organization that connects the supplies with students in need.  Comerica is asking anyone who wishes to donate to bring the supplies to the lobby of their local branch, where a donation box will be available.  This …

After more than 20 years in the district, L'Anse Creuse Superintendent Dr. DiAnne Pellerin plans to retire in the winter. Pellerin announced her intent to retire at the Monday board of education meeting. Her last day is expected to be Jan. 27, according to the district. In 1990, she started her career at the district as principal of Chesterfield Elementary School. In 1994, she became the director of elementary education, focusing on improving curriculum and instruction.
