The Macomb County Sheriff's Office investigated the matter at the request of the township police chief and supervisor after they faced scrutiny of wrongdoing.
Updated: 3 p.m. Friday Following a two-week investigation into alleged wrongdoing in Chesterfield Township, Macomb County authorities said Friday no crimes were committed. The investigation revolved around the sale of used township vehicles that Supervisor Michael Lovelock proposed at a recent board meeting. Multiple board members said they approved to sell the six vehicles for $4,000 but weren't aware the purchaser is the boyfriend of Lovelock's daughter. Chesterfield Township Police Chief Bruce Smith brought the matter to the Sheriff's Office because he and Lovelock were accused of favoritism. Smith was heard on an audio recording, asking a dispatcher to not impound the driver's newly purchased truck after he was stopped for speeding …

Flights at community events and the 2013 Thunderbirds' season have been canceled, according to the U.S. Air Force.
Detroit Tigers fans can keep their eyes on the field Friday during opening day. That's because Selfridge Air National Guard Base will not be participating this year in the annual flyover at Comerica Park. Potential federal sequester cuts have not only affected the beloved baseball flyover, they have also grounded goodwill flights during community events, including parades, trade shows, F-22 demonstration flights and more for the remainder of the 2013 fiscal year, according to the U.S. Air Force. "Given the current federal budget environment, the Air Force has stopped all aviation support to community events, to include our traditional fly-over of the Tigers' home opener," Technical Sgt. Dan Heaton, 127th Wing spokesman at Selfridge Air …

The legislation, which was championed by lawmakers along Lake St. Clair received bipartisan support in the House and Senate.
Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation Wednesday allowing for $21 million from the state for 58 emergency harbor dredging projects amid record low water levels in the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair. "As the Great Lakes State, we need to ensure the availability of our beautiful waterways to boaters to support tourism, local communities, the state economy and safe boating," Snyder said in a prepared statement. "I thank the Legislature for approving these funds in time for the boating season." Locally, legislators who represent communities along Lake St. Clair pushed for the emergency dredging legislation, including Sen Jack Brandenburg, R-Harrison Township, who called for low-interest loans for marinas. Brandenburg was joined by Republican …
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office is interviewing several township officials about a deal orchestrated by Supervisor Michael Lovelock to sell six used vehicles.
As the Macomb County Sheriff's Office investigates circumstances around the sale of six public vehicles, some Chesterfield Township officials say they also want answers. Township Clerk Cindy Berry said Wednesday Supervisor Michael Lovelock's March 18 request to sell six used township vehicles to Larry Schwartz for a total of $4,000 is raising serious questions. “It’s getting more and more confusing to me," Berry said. "Nothing’s adding up correctly.” The sale of the Department of Public Works and building department vehicles--deemed by Lovelock as in poor condition—was approved 6-0 by the township board. But, township officials say they were not aware that Schwartz is reportedly the boyfriend of Lovelock's daughter and the supervisor …

Updated 2:10 p.m. Wednesday After criticism of potential wrongdoing, Chesterfield Township Police Chief Bruce Smith requested an independent investigation last week, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told Patch Wednesday. Sign up for the Patch daily newsletter and follow us on Facebook. The Sheriff's Office is investigating an alleged deal in the township involving the sale of used vehicles to someone believed to be Lovelock's family member. “The investigation is to look at all activity that revolves around that vehicle and to see if there's any kind of criminal activity," Wickersham said. The sheriff said that it was Smith who brought the matter to his attention--saying that both the police chief and Lovelock wanted his office to…
