Bowlers Gather to Strike Out Illiteracy

The Anchor Bay Rotary held a fundraiser to support area literacy programs.

Members and supporters of Anchor Bay Rotary turned up at Premier Lanes Friday night for fun and fundraising, part of the organization’s 2nd Annual Charity Bowl.

Close to 50 people showed up to bowl for area literacy programs. Ted Whittlesey, president of Anchor Bay Rotary, said turnout was pretty even with last year, which is always good news to report.

He said those who showed to show support enjoyed three games of 9 Pin No Tap bowling, food and  soda. They also had a shot at raffles, including the 50/50 and several door prizes, for which a number of area businesses generously donated gift baskets, including sweet treats, fishing gear and a laundry basket (literally) of drink mixes and flavored schnapps.

David Miller, president of the separate Rotary Foundation, was in attendance to bowl and boost his fellow Rotarian’s mission. He said Anchor Bay Rotary does a lot of events for various causes—including a wine tasting in the fall (Nov. 4, this year)—but this charity bowl was for reading and literacy programs for all ages, including several through Chesterfield Township Library.

Miller, of Macomb Township, made it a family night, bringing his wife Jennifer and father-in-law Dennis Glasser, of Shelby Township, and others. Glasser was happy to be along, saying it’s a nice way “to raise a few bucks” for the cause.
