Fate Uncertain for One of New Baltimore's Longest Standing Buildings

A decision is coming for the property on 51235 Washington Street.

A longstanding piece of New Baltimore's history may soon be just a memory.

The building, which calls 51235 Washington Street home, is currently the topic of demolition talks.

Erected in 1899, the spot has been the site of a goods and grocery store, a post office, a dry cleaners and even Anchor Bay High School classrooms.

Tom Pilarowski, a local historian and member of the New Baltimore Historical Society, remembers when his grandparents owned part of the building in the 1950's, and his father's business, Deluxe Cleaners, was inside.

"Saving it and restoring it is so much better than just another empty lot," said Pilarowski. "It just makes me sick to see that building come down... I am positive that it can be saved."

Currently vacant, the decision of whether not to demolish the building will take place during the Historic District Commission Meeting May 1 at 7 p.m.
