Funeral Services Set for Former New Baltimore Mayor Greg Bayer

Bayer was deeply involved in the community and many area organizations.

Funeral arrangements are scheduled this week for former New Baltimore mayor Gregory Bayer. Bayer, who was actively involved in the community for many years, died July 12. He was 78. 

Visitation is from 2-9 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary Wednesday at Gendernalik Funeral Home. Instate is 10 a.m. until a 10:30 a.m. Mass Thursday at St. Mary Queen of Creation Church. Memorials may be made to the Anchor Bay Community Foundation, according to the funeral home website.

Bayer had several roles in the community, serving the zoning board, planning commission, Lions Club and Civic Clubs. He was a member of the Goodfellows, AmVets, Knights of Columbus, Anchor Bay Community Foundation, New Baltimore Historical Society and Bay-A-Rama, according to a death notice in The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press

Following 32 years at General Motors, he was elected New Baltimore mayor in the 1990s. During that time, he was instrumental in rebuilding the waterfront park, launching the popular Winterfest event and more. He was named New Baltimore Citizen of the Year in 2004. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann, siblings, six children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the notice states.
