Get Fit at New Baltimore Rec Center

Assistant director Carlos Aprea is a man with a mission: A healthier population.

Carlos Aprea, assistant director of the New Baltimore, is a man with a mission.

He took over the center in August, and is dedicated to fitness and fighting obesity. “I see a need for pushing a healthy side of life,” he says.

Aprea is one who's keeping the center open seven days a week, and is putting a variety of classes on the schedule, from boxing to bridal boot camp, to Tai Chi and Zumba, to Sporties for Shorties, and much more. He's teaching a handful of the classes as well, including Sunday boxing, and kids boxing, which hits the schedule in March.

“I want to be a tool for fitness in the community,” Aprea says. He's worked tirelessly to bring more options to residents and non-residents alike. He says he's made deals with Mount Clemens Ice Arena for New Baltimore residents to take skating lessons, and made arrangements with the Windermere Equestrian Center in Clinton Township for horseback riding lessons.

If that isn't enough to keep him busy, he's also organizing a triathlon this summer (to be held July 9), and is planning a running group to meet and pound the pavement regularly.

He's also working on keeping kids active, offering floor hockey, the aforementioned boxing, and Sporties for Shorties (where kids play hockey, baseball, soccer, etc).

You have to keep it interesting for kids, he says, and the activities he plans won't leave anyone out. Here, there's no being the last kid picked in gym class.

And, as an added incentive, he invites anyone to try a class for free. If you like it, sign up, if not, try something else.

The New Baltimore Recreation Center is open 9 am-9 pm Monday-Friday; 9 am-3 pm Saturday; and 10 am-3 pm Sunday.
