On Your Mark, Get Set: Jingle Bell Run!

The annual holiday run and walk took place Sunday in downtown New Baltimore

Runners from southeastern Michigan and beyond flocked to downtown New Baltimore Sunday for the annual Jingle Bell Run.

The weekend race was expected to surpass previous pre-registrant totals, with more than 1,200 sign-ups and another 200-400 projected to register that day, according to organizers.

"It's kind of jumping up every year," Race Director Ric Wellman said Sunday.

The holiday-themed event meandering throughout the city lures athletes and Christmas-lovers alike and has become tradition for many participants, Wellman said.

Event proceeds are to benefit the Anchor Bay High School DECA Chapter, student scholarships and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Money raised from last year's race also went to various community causes, including a $1,000 donation to the New Baltimore Civic Club for new Christmas tree decorations on the city tree that was lit last Monday.

After years of organizing the event, retired teachers Wellman and Chuck Robinet are looking to pass the torch. They have been in talks with different groups at the high school, the New Baltimore Downtown Development Authority and New Baltimore Parks and Recreation to partner with DECA for the event.

Children of all ages and adults braved the cold weather Sunday, walking or running around the city decorated for Christmas and buzzing with holiday music.
