Community Corner

Patch Picks: Top Nonprofits

These groups give their time, talents, labor and more to benefit those in need.

Nonprofits do so much for the community in so many ways. These groups make sure children have a Christmas to celebrate. They supply families with food to eat. They help individuals after a job loss or major medical expenses. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The people behind these organizations work long hours for no profit, save for the knowledge that they are doing good for their fellow man.

As a result, Patch has five nonprofits picked out. On a personal note, it's hard to choose just five because there are so many great organizations, but we decided to think locally, and hope you'll chime in with your picks.

  • New Baltimore Lions: These cats are busy: They make fundraising look fun, by organizing great events such as and the Polar Bear Plunge, with proceeds benefiting various charities, including Leader Dogs for the Blind and New Baltimore's Recreation Youth Baseball.
  • New Baltimore Police Officers Association: This group is pretty involved in the community. One upcoming highlight is the , to be held May 7 at Salt River Golf Course. This event raises funds to help area families, providing food, clothing and other assistance.
  • Chesterfield Goodfellows: Working with Chesterfield Firefighters and the Firefighters Local 4011, this group helps out with Toys for Tots to make sure no child goes without a Christmas. Also, their annual fundraiser—held Dec. 4—made the season merrier for more than 300 area children, raising more than $4,000.
  • MCREST (Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team): While this is county-based and not formally "in town," the organization has a rotation of area churches that shelter men, women and children, roughly a week at a time. Homeless people can go to these shelters for a good meal and a safe place to sleep.
  • Care House: New Baltimore Police Chief Tim Wiley recommends this organization, which works to prevent child abuse in all its forms and to counsel victims on the path to healing. Police and counselors work together to build a case and help the child and family.

There are five picks, but we know there are plenty more. If you want to suggest a list of your own or think we missed something, please submit your idea in the comment box.
