Happening This Week: Patriotism, Heritage and Golf

A special 9/11 memorial at Metro Beach, golf for cops, a historical society celebration of our heritage and other fun events await you this week.

Perhaps you're reading this Monday morning, enjoying your Labor Day holiday, and are thinking, "What can I do that's fun for the whole family?"

If that's the case, today's the final day of the . Head to downtown Romeo for some sweet fun. There are arts and crafts shows. There are plenty of goodies to enjoy, including a bake sale, chicken and rib dinners, deep fried peach desserts, peach pies and more. There are three parades: The Children's Parade at 10 a.m., the 1 p.m. VFW Post 2052 Peach Festival Parade and the 1:30 p.m. 2011 Peach Festival Floral Parade. If you're thirsty, take in the beer and refreshment tents, and enjoy Vegas games and bingo, too. And last, but not least, there's the carnival. Where there's a Tilt-A-Whirl and a Ferris wheel, there are happy children.


Where/When: Ike's Dining, 38550 Van Dyke, Sterling Heights, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sept. 8.
Why Go: For fashion-fixated types, the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry is hosting this event, part of the Business Women's Exchange series and sponsored by Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center. Guests will enjoy the latest fall fashions, lunch and networking opportunities. Patch Editors Jenny Whalen (Macomb) and Marina Cracchiolo (Shelby-Utica) will be modeling the latest fashions as part of the event.
Pricing: $25 for SHRCCI and Anchor Bay Chamber of Commerce members, or $35 for "not yet" members.

Where/When: , 33845 24 Mile Road, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8.
Why Go: The Fraternal Order of Police is holding a pig roast at Copper Creek Manor. Menu includes sausage, corn and potatoes. FYI: The lodge meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. with the dinner immediately afterwards.
Pricing: $10 members, $15 for guests


Where/When: Greystone Golf Course, 67500 Mound, Romeo, 9 a.m. Sept. 9.
Why Go: Support the Fraternal Order of Police-Central Macomb Lodge #187 on their ninth annual golf outing. Four-person scramble format includes 18 holes of golf with cart, raffle prizes, contests, continental breakfast, hot dogs at the turn, steak dinner, and all-you-can-drink beer and soda served on the course.

Where/When: , 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 10.
Why Go: Teens, it's time to get Chesterfield Township Library ready for fall. Volunteers will take down summer decorations and put up autumn-themed designs. Lunch will be provided, and hours count toward school volunteer requirements. Registration is required. Call 586-598-4900 and ask for Miss Jennie or Miss Holly.


Where/When: Macomb Place and North Walnut, downtown Mount Clemens, 11 a.m. Sept. 10.
Why Go: It's the final day of the Summer Fun Saturdays season. Head to the Fountain Stage on Macomb Place and enjoy live entertainment. Today, Rosco the Clown will amuse kids with magic and balloon animals.
Pricing: Free.


Where/When: , 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sept. 10.
Why Go: Chesterfield Township Historical Society celebrates Heritage Day 2011, with classic cars, including a 1940 Packard Darrin; candlemaking, blacksmithing and woodcarving demonstrations; children's games; a live horseshoeing demonstration; and an antique engine draw sawing a log and grinding corn. Crafts will also be sold, and the public can check out the society's newly acquired 1920s replica of a horseless wagon and vintage potato planter.
Cost: $1 per adult, $2 per family.


Where/When: The Historic Center at , noon-4 p.m. Sept. 11.
Why Go: Head to Wolcott Mill for Applefest. Visitors can sample different varieties, make apple crafts, try recipes, make cider and hear some history of the fruit. There will also be five scarecrows that need decorating, so guests are invited to help out. Cider and doughnuts will be available.
Pricing: Free, but donations will be accepted. The park charges a $5 daily admission per vehicle, unless you have an annual Metroparks pass. Call 586-749-5997 if you have questions.


Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark, 5-9:30 p.m. Sept. 11.
Why Go: The Huron-Clinton Metroparks are holding special 9/11 tributes at the parks, including Metro Beach. Family fun starts at 5 p.m., with face painting, bounce houses, music and more. At 8:15 an official recognition and thank-you ceremony will begin, concluding with the lighting of floating lanterns at 9:11 p.m., which will be released over the lake. Guests can purchase sky lanterns on site that evening for $5, money that will benefit the Salvation Army.
Pricing: Free admission for veterans, active military, police and firefighters starting at 5 p.m. Otherwise, a vehicle entry permit is required to enter any Huron-Clinton Metropark. Cost is $5 for the day.
