Chesterfield Township Race Team Zooms to Belle Isle Grand Prix

Capaldi Racing of Chesterfield Township will showcase three drivers in the weekend race.

A Chesterfield Township race team has secured a coveted spot in the popular Detroit Chevrolet Belle Isle Grand Prix this weekend.

Three drivers from the family-operated Capaldi Racing will compete in races Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Displayed front and center in the competition's two Pirelli World Challenge races, the company will showcase three new 2013 Mustang Boss 302s.

Among the drivers of these vehicles will be Craig Capaldi of Richmond. Capaldi, a second-generation driver who has experience in the NASA American Iron among other known challenges, will be competing in his first-ever street race.

Capaldi’s father, Leo, founded Capaldi Racing in 1979. The company has earned multiple national sprint and enduro karting titles.

“We’re very proud to be a Detroit team, and as a Detroit team this race is very special to us. Both Craig and I were born within miles of Belle Isle and have grown up in the Detroit area,” team principal Leo Capaldi said in a news release.

"It’s an amazing feeling not only to be campaigning one, but three Mustangs in the race," he added.

Capaldi Racing's primary sponsor in the Grand Prix is the Roseville-based casting business, Wolverine Bronze. In addition, the team is working alongside the Animal Aid Foundation, a metro Detroit nonprofit organization that places homeless animals in loving homes and hosts educational programs on pet ownership.
