Local Jimmy John's Owner Discusses New Baltimore Restaurant

Jimmy John's fans may be especially excited about winter in New Baltimore.

That's because plans are underway for a new shop to open before 2013.

"It should probably be done by the end of the year," said owner Gerard Nicosia, who also runs the on Gratiot.

Site plans are scheduled to go before the city's Planning Commission Sept. 18 and, if all goes well, construction will begin soon after, Nicosia said.

The blueprints call for the across from to be completely renovated to fit the Jimmy John's look. A drive-thru will also be installed to accommodate sub patrons on the go.

Nicosia said other Jimmy John's locations have seen a lot of success with drive-thrus.

For diners who wish to eat there, they will find an interior unlike the former cafe.

"It's going to be totally different," he said.

The kitchen will be moved to the other side of the building and the dining area will be changed. The existing bathrooms, however, are slated to stay in place. Outside, the parking lot will be redone.

The hype for is proof of the chain's growing popularity compared to the Chesterfield opening eight years ago.

"When we first looked at Chesterfield, no one really knew what Jimmy John's was," he said.

The decision to open at the 23 Mile location followed a lengthy scouting process for the ideal location.

"Between myself and Jimmy John's that seemed to be the best spot," Nicosia said.
