Boaters Rescued on Lake St. Clair During Storm

A Madison Heights couple was rescued Monday afternoon from Lake St. Clair during a turbulent storm, police said Tuesday.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., the Sheriff’s Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call of a capsized boat with two people in the water. The caller told deputies his GPS coordinates before his phone stopped working, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

When deputies arrived, they brought the 58-year-old male caller to safety after another, nearby boater had already helped the 53-year-old female from the water onto another vessel, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The couple told deputies they launched their boat from the South River Access in Harrison Township to fish that afternoon. Around 4:45 p.m., they received a call from a family member who told them of the impending storm. As they were trying to return to land, their 17-foot aluminum boat had engine trouble, the Sheriff's Office states.

Both of them were wearing lifejackets, police said.

“Had it not been for these simple precautions, this could have ended tragically," Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham states.
