Chesterfield Township to Hold Public Hearing on Police Costs

Chesterfield Township residents were recently mailed a public hearing notice regarding police protection costs.

The township said the meeting will be "to hear comments which may be offered concerning the estimate of costs and expense of providing police protection as determined by the Township Board and to the spread of the existing special assessment levy for said police protestion, as approved by the voters in 1996," according to the notice.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 15 at Municipal Offices, 47275 Sugarbush.

The township recently opted not to lay off police employees in 2013 after a controversial plan to cut roughly 14 positions was announced. Township officials, however, have discussed the possibility of putting a tax increase proposal back to voters in the near future--this time with a sunset clause. A majority of voters turned down the ballot proposal last November to add 2.5 mills for police collection. The department already collects 5 mills.
