Freshwater Collaborative Aims to Advance Lake St. Clair, Clinton River

A freshwater collaborate plans to explore economic and environmental opportunities for Lake St. Clair and the Clinton River.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel with the Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development, Wayne State University, Macomb Community College and the Huron Clinton Metropolitan Authority announced Friday the launch of the Huron to Erie Alliance for Research and Training (HEART) Freshwater Center, part of the county's Blue Economy Initiative.

"This is another collaborative effort that is pulling regional assets together to help better understand and promote our freshwater advantage," Hackel stated.

The initiative, drawing from the lake's heart shape, will study how the 430-square mile body of water functions, with shores in the United States and Canada and a drinking water source for nearly four million people. The lake is also known for bass fishing.

The HEART Freshwater Center will have a mobile laboratory and classroom out of Lake St.Clair Metropark.

"This center will provide important opportunities for students, faculty and many others to conduct innovative research and learning opportunities focused on urban freshwater systems and the environment," Hilary Ratner, vice president for research at Wayne State University, stated.
