Happening This Week: Stars and Stripes, A Puppet Palooza and More

If you're still craving carnivals and live music post-Fishfly Festival, head a bit south for Stars and Stripes. Or, check out marionettes at the DIA or a day of disc golf action at Stony Creek.

Where/When: ; 2 and 3:30 p.m. June 28 and 2 p.m. June 29.
Why Go: MacDonald Public Library is taking youngsters in grades K-2 (on Tuesdays, and also at 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays) and grades 3-6 (on Wednesdays) "Around the World" through reading. This week's destination is France. 
Pricing: Free. Register your children online at www.macdonaldlibrary.org.


Where/When: Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit; Wednesdays-Sundays beginning June 29, running through year's end.
Why Go: Whether you find them enchanting and whimsical or a bit unsettling, marionettes are fascinating little works of art. The DIA is displaying some of its top examples of American "Royal Marionettes" from its Paul McPharlin Puppetry Collection starting Wednesday. Visit and see these mini-marvels with centuries of history behind them.
Pricing: Free for members. Otherwise $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for ages 6-17.

Where/When: Downtown Mount Clemens, July 1-4.
Why Go: Get ready for four days of fun at Stars and Stripes, where thousands will converge to enjoy live music, a carnival and fireworks. The music acts alone are a highlight, with Ace Frehley from KISS, Sweet of "Ballroom Blitz" fame, Soul Asylum, Smash Mouth, Tonic, Rick Springfield and others headlining. ooked for this event for the other three stages.
Pricing: The Stars and Stripes Festival is free, but concertgoers have a chance to buy VIP tickets at all Ticketmaster outlets or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com and by calling 248-645-6666. Why Go: Enjoy the fireworks spectacle over the lake on Baypoint Beach at Stony Creek Metropark. It's advised to arrive at least two hours early due to crowd conditions.
Pricing: Free with vehicle entry permit. 

Where/When: , 4300 Main Park Drive, Shelby Township; 8 a.m. July 4.
Why Go: Disc golf fans, enjoy some competition at Stony Creek, part of a three-park tourmament, starting at Stony Creek, moving on to Oakland University, and round 3 is at Firefighters Park in Troy.
