Summer Fireworks Season Ready to Kick Off

The fireworks display Thursday night in Walter and Mary Burke Park will be one of many such shows in the area this summer.

Fireworks have been an integral part of Fourth of July celebrations since 1777, when Bostonians celebrated the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in style. To this day, chances are that there will be a firework display in or near your community come summertime. Below is a schedule of upcoming spectacles in the area.

June 23: in New Baltimore
The 47th year of the Bay-Rama Fishfly Festival will be topped off with fireworks at dusk Thursday night. Admission to the festival is free, and the display will be accompanied by food, games and music. For more information about the fireworks and the festival, visit www.bay-rama.com.

June 24: in St. Clair Shores
The city’s annual Fireworks Extravaganza will and cost $2 per person. Although this year’s show is the first time the city has ever charged an admission fee—parking is an additional $5—the 35-minute long spectacle shouldn’t disappoint. June 26: in Grosse Pointe Woods
Grosse Pointe Woods decided to celebrate Independence Day a bit early this year. begin at 7 p.m. and the fireworks start at dusk. For more information call 313-343-2440 or visit gpwmi.us.

June 27: Downtown Detroit
The Parade Company and Target host the 53rd Annual Target Fireworks 10:06 p.m. Monday, June 27 in Downtown Detroit along the Riverfront. The show will include more than 10,000 pyrotechnics choreographed and will be televised on WDIV Channel 4. Go to www.theparade.org/riverdays.php for more info.

July 1: Clinton Riverfront Park in Mount Clemens
The largest fireworks display in Macomb County will be launched around 10 p.m. as a kickoff for the community’s annual Stars and Stripes Festival. For more information, call 586-469-4168 or visit www.starsandstripesfest.com.

July 2: in Shelby Township
Fireworks will be launched over Baypointe Beach at 10 p.m. and will be visible from anywhere in the park. Cost is only that of a vehicle entry permit, which is $5 for the day. The Huron-Clinton Metropark Authority advises spectators to arrive two hours early due to crowd conditions, according to its website. July 2: in Grosse Pointe Farms
The city’s annual regatta will include a fireworks display at 9:45 p.m. Saturday following a free concert by Soul Provider. Call (313) 885-6600 or visit http://www.ci.grosse-pointe-farms.mi.us/ for more information.

July 8 and 9: in Grosse Pointe Shores
Detroit Symphony Orchestra concerts at 8:30 p.m. by fireworks at approximately 10 p.m. The house’s grounds will be open for visitors to explore as well. Advance tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for children. Tickets bought at the gate cost $25 for adults, $15 for children. Visit www.fordhouse.org for more information.
