Volunteers Wanted to Sort Food at Hall Road Warehouse for Pantries

The food was collected during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive.

The Macomb Food Program is looking for volunteers to help sort food that will stock food banks, soup kitchens and pantries in the area.

The helpers will go through 1.25 million pounds of food that was collected in the  annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive this past May that was co-sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service, according to the county.

In Macomb County alone, letter carriers collected more than 532,002 pounds of food--305,709 of which the Macomb Food Program received.

“We rely on individuals and groups of volunteers to help us get the food to the people who need it most,” Linda Azar, Macomb Food Program coordinator, said in a statement. “Volunteers help us to sort canned and boxed non-perishable food from large totes and pack it into smaller boxes at our warehouse on Hall Road.”

The boxes then will be shipped to 55 Macomb County pantries, according to the organization.

Volunteer sorters are welcome weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. For more information and warehouse directions, call 586-469-6004.
