Visions for Vacancies: What Do You Want to Replace Former Car Dealership?

Patch asks readers to share their hopes for vacancies in Chesterfield and New Baltimore.

You've passed them frequently. You remembered when they were hustling retail centers. Perhaps, you shopped at them and wished something else would take their places.

In our weekly Visions for Vacancies feature, readers become pseudo city planners by offering an opportunity to share dreams for empty storefronts.

Our highlighted vacancy is the former Michael Chevrolet Dealership on 23 Mile near Interstate 94 in Chesterfield Township.

So, Patch is asking our readers--many of whom live, work and shop in this community: What would you like to see there?

Share your ideas with us in the comments section below.

We have all said it on almost EVERY one of these vacancy articles. We need a quality produce/ whole foods type store! Can't the city approach these types of stores to get one up here?? Proactively??

I would like to see traffic improved at this intersection first and foremost.

I think it would make a very nice truck stop with bathrooms, eatery ect. There is none on this side of town at all all the way up the the bridge.

Many readers on our Facebook page are hoping for a Sam's Club or Costco there. Some other suggestions: Trader Joe's, Aldi, Planet Fitness and a drive-in theater.

I would like to see it turned into a mini campus for Baker College, University of Phoenix, Northwood University or perhaps even a vocational school that can produce state certified mechanics.

Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would be nice!

Church - Nino Salvaggios -- like the college satelite campus idea........

I think it should be a place to get the freshest cup of coffee in town - but that's just me. ;-)
Jill Spurlin Mostek September 18, 2012 at 04:59 PM
Definitely, this area needs a nice fruit market, like Nino Salvaggios or Randazzos.
Mary Rancilio September 18, 2012 at 05:40 PM
I would love a fres produce store such as Nino's or Randazzo's!!
Jennifer Balok September 18, 2012 at 06:02 PM
I am for Nino's or Randazzo's. We need a fruit market!

I agree with Chris. The traffic issues need to be addressed. With Dunham's moving into the Target complex there needs to be a light to allow traffic to enter and exit that complex. it is extremely difficult to get in/out of that complex. How many accidents does it take before someome does something. On the subject - Costco would be great in the old Michael's dealership.

From what I have heard Nino's and Randazzo's have been approached by the Township. They both stated that we did not have a demographic that would support locations in Chesterfield.

I liked the Costco idea but the drive in would be awsome
Kathy Elliott September 19, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Demographics is very important. There is a flat line cost to do business and company's need to know there will be enough traffic to meet those costs along with a potential for growth before they will invest. The county has rolled out the slogan "Make Macomb Your Home" and I say Choose Chesterfield.

The Township Clerk and the Planning/Zoning Department have been contacting numerous businesses to fill the vacant buildings in the township. We have emailed and called Vince & Joe's, Nino Salvaggio's, Trader Joes and Randazzos, but none are interested at this time. Trader Joes wants residents to load up their email with requests to come to their community. It would greatly help the cause if anyone who is interested in having Trader Joe be a part of Chesterfield make an effort to let them know we would like them to be a part of our business community.

Denise...I totally agree with you. As Township Clerk, I have directed the Planning and Zoning Department to look into numerous truck stop companies such as Pilot and Flying J. There is a beautiful stop in Walcott, Iowa called the Iowa 80 and what is nice about it is that it also houses a museum. I have been talking about this for a couple of years....as a matter of fact ever since my son-in-law brought it up. He is a cross-country driver and stated that there were no truckstops along I-94 for truckers to rest and clean up. I thought the Chevy Dealership was a perfect location because it was close to the interstate on and off ramps and not in the backyard of residential districts.

I do not believe this spot would be the best site for a Trader Joe's or another produce store, but the old Kmart store and the old Farmer Jack store would have been best suited for this type of business, unfortunately the Farmer Jack store will be renovated and Dunham Sports is going to move in.
Jan Uglis September 24, 2012 at 06:42 PM
You are correct, both have been approached, but Randazzo's stated that if they had not built the store on Hayes (I believe that is the location) they may have given thought to Chesterfield. My understanding is Nino's is definitely not interested in Chesterfield.

The township is looking at contacting Cosco for the the area located next to the Allstate office on 23 Mile Road (Walmart was interested in this property, but changed their mind). The Clerk and Planning/Zoning will be contacting Cosco in the near future. We definitely need a big box store in that area.

Costco for sure would be great.
