Free Rx Discount Card and Health Outreach Provide Services and Relief to Residents

News about a free prescription drug discount card which may help county residents save 24% on their prescriptions, and an upcoming health outreach on Oct. 19 at the Chesterfield Senior Center.

I’d like to spread the word about the free Macomb County Prescription Discount Card, an invaluable program which helps contribute some relief to Macomb County residents who may be struggling with the high cost of some prescription drugs.

Did you know that you may be able to reduce the cost of your prescription drugs by an average of 24-percent using the card? This free program is made possible through a partnership between the county and the National Association of Counties (NACo), and assists residents who are with or without insurance, or who have prescriptions which are not covered by insurance.

Accepted by more than 60,000 retail pharmacies nationwide (that’s nine out of 10 pharmacies), free Macomb County Prescription Discount Card is valid at many of the leading chain drugstores. In addition, some pet medications are even covered if the medication is also used to treat a human condition!

Obtaining the card is as easy as visiting www.nacorx.org and printing one out, or calling the Macomb County Senior Services Department at (586) 469-6313 for more information. Using the card is just as easy: just present your card at a participating retail pharmacy to get the discount. There are no claim forms to fill out, and no limit to the number of times you can use the card!

You may also pick up a card at an upcoming health outreach I will be attending this month. Come out to the Chesterfield Senior Center at 47275 Sugarbush, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on October 19 for the county’s annual area health outreach and look for the Board of Commissioner’s table!

Low-cost seasonal flu vaccines will be available at the event for adults and children who are at least 6-months-old. Free health screenings will be offered and may include blood pressure testing, glucose tests, vision screening, bone density screening and mini-massage. Exhibitors with information of interest to senior citizens will be on hand and specialists will answer questions about Medicare. Outdated, non-narcotic medications will also be collected at these events, and Pneumonia and Tdap (for diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough) vaccines will be available.

The Health Department accepts Medicaid and Medicare Part B for eligible vaccines, and the cost of flu vaccines for all others is $15, check or cash. Check with your insurance company prior to attending and ask if vaccines are covered by your health insurance plan.

Also, I will also be providing free goodie bags for all attendees and boxed lunches to the first 200 people through the door, so don’t be late!

For more information on the outreach, call Senior Services at (586) 469-6313.
