Summer dreams of using the 16-fountain attraction in Brandenburg Park have been dashed by the arrival of colder weather. But, securing state permits to finish construction on time was the real hold up, according to Supervisor Michael Lovelock.

The splash park requires approval from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality that has multiple pending projects to oversee, Lovelock said.

"You have to wait your turn," he said. "I was hoping it was going to be open this year for the kids but obviously it didn't happen."

He said he hopes to learn more about the status of the permit requests in the next week or so.

Township officials initially were planning on a grand opening ceremony in September, but that has been pushed back to an undetermined date.

Lovelock says the splash park could be completed when winter ends and it should be open in time for summer 2013.
