Raped at 7 by her mother’s boyfriend and convinced that it was her voice that caused a mob to beat him to death, Maya Angelou descended into silence for six years before she found her voice  again, raising it in verse and activism that would inspire generations.

Her publicist said Wednesday that Angelou died at her Winston-Salem, NC, home, CNN is reporting. She was 86.

Her poem about inequality fits the Muslim women very well. "Take the blinders from your vision, take the padding from your ears, and confess you’ve heard me crying, and admit you’ve seen my tears. Equality, and I will be free. Equality, and I will be free."
