2 Roseville Teens Arrested for Breaking Into Cars in Chesterfield Township

Two Roseville teens were arrested Monday for breaking into unlocked cars in a Chesterfield Township neighborhood, according to .

The suspects, David Nathaniel White and Matthew Ryan Desmarais, both 18, were charged and arraigned Wednesday in the in New Baltimore. White faces a misdemeanor charge of receiving and concealing stolen property, less than $200, while Desmarais faces two felony charges of larceny from a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen financial transaction device, according to police. 

White's bond was set at $5,000 (10 percent), and Desmarais' at $1,000.

A third suspect was arrested, but not charged, police said.

On Monday, at approximately 2 a.m., a resident in the 24 Mile Road and Gratiot area called 911 to report three suspicious persons going in and out of unlocked vehicles in his neighborhood, according to police. 

The suspects fled at the sight of Chesterfield police arriving at the scene, but all were located shortly after, police said. Officers found several items taken from the vehicles on the suspects and strewn throughout the neighborhood.

Officers were able to immediately identify Desmarais as an individual they had arrested previously for breaking into unlocked cars in the same neighborhood.

"Having items stolen from unlocked vehicles has unfortunately become a common 'crime of opportunity,' not just in Chesterfield, but everywhere," said Chesterfield Det. Sgt. Deron Myers, in a prepared statement. "We continue to urge our residents and visitors to remove, or at least conceal their valuables, and lock up their vehicles when leaving them unattended."
