New Baltimore Deputy Fire Chief Bilinski Urges Vigilance Against Arson

Governor Snyder has declared May 6-12 as Arson Awareness Week in Michigan.

In order to bring the public's attention to the increasing problem of firesetting by young people, Governor Rick Snyder has declared May 6-12 as National Arson Awareness Week in Michigan.

Arson, also known as the act of maliciously lighting property on fire, affects all of us, said Brian Bilinski.

"It's great to bring awareness and get the word out about arson to everyday people who might not understand what it is," said Bilinski. "Arson is especially important because of the large dollar amount loss of businesses and homes."

According to the National Fire Protection Association, in a four-year period (2005-2009), fires started by children playing were responsible for more than 53,000 fires, resulting in 390 civilian deaths and $1.1 billion in direct property damage.

From 2005-2010, 46 percent of arson arrests were juveniles (those under the age of 18).

The NFPA notes that "intentionally set home structure fires are more likely to be set in the afternoon and evening hours, between 3 pm and midnight" with the bedroom being the origin area of the fire. In public places, bathrooms are the leading areas for such activity.

Bilinski stresses how important it is to bring attention to arson, and how simple it is to call and report suspicious activity.
