Careless Smoking Started Chesterfield House Fire

Smoking is what sparked a late December house fire on Bayshore Drive that spread from the garage into the kitchen, the township Fire Department said Saturday.

investigators determined careless smoking as cause of a late December house fire, Capt. Richard Schroeder said Saturday.

Flames sparked in the garage and then spread into the kitchen. Schroeder said the home on Bayshore Drive in the Meldrum and Jefferson area was rented by occupants at the time. He declined to discuss further details of the fire.

Fire officials said a teenage resident of the home escaped the Dec. 30 blaze uninjured. Several fire departments, including Chesterfield Township, , Lenox Township, Harrison Township and Mount Clemens were at the scene.
