Chesterfield Township Man, 80, Dies from Beating Injuries

A 23-year-old Canton man is accused of beating the elderly man at a Warren behavioral facility.

An 80-year-old Chesterfield Township man succumbed to injuries he sustained in a brutal beating at a Warren psychiatric facility.

Albert Potter, a retiree who worked for Detroit Public Schools, died Thursday after being taken off life support the previous day at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, according to a Detroit Free Press report

Potter came to the Behavioral Center of Michigan for treatment of depression in mid-January. He was responding favorably and expected to join his wife at an assisted-living facility afterward. He was slated for release the day before another patient attacked him, on Jan. 27, for no known reason, his family attorney told the newspaper.

Suspect Jajuan Whitlow, 23, of Canton, was charged with assault with intent to commit murder and was being held on a $500,000 bond. Whitlow, who was reportedly hearing voices when he entered the 42-bed center, is due for psychiatric evaluation at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti, the article states.
