Chesterfield Township Man Charged in Fatal Car Crash in Highland Park

Jeremy Sherman-Gill Yancey was arraigned Wednesday in 30th District Court on three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of operating while impaired causing death and reckless driving causing death.

A Chesterfield Township man will face charges in connection with a car crash that killed three people in Highland Park on April 12, according to a statement from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Jeremy Sherman-Gill Yancey was arraigned Wednesday in 30th District Court on three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of operating while impaired causing death and reckless driving causing death.

If convicted, the second-degree murder charge carries a sentence of up to life in prison. The charges of operating while impaired causing death and reckless driving causing death are punishable by up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Yancey faces a preliminary hearing on May 7 at 9 a.m. in 30th District Court.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor, Highland Park police said they attempted to stop Yancey after observing him driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed but stopped the chase when police decided it was unsafe.

Police said Yancey continued to drive recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic before he crashed into a van carrying three people.

A 61-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were killed upon impact, police said. A 59-year-old woman died after she was taken to the hospital.

Police said Yancy was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, according to the prosecutor’s statement.
