Crime Blotter: Fake Name Suspect Didn't Want to Return to Jail

The following information was provided by Chesterfield Township police. Where arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate convictions.

Fingerprints Show Suspect Gave Fake Name

A driver speeding down westbound I-94 around 10 p.m. Sept. 8 told a police officer he didn't have his license on him but identified himself by name.

Police put the driver of the white Chevrolet in the back of the squad car, according to a report.

Once at the station, the man's fingerprints showed up in the database as those belonging to someone with an extensive criminal history. When confronted about lying, he said, "I did not want to go back to jail," the police report said.

The man, whose age and residence were not released, was issued a ticket for giving a false identity to police, expired license and speeding.

Loose Seat Belt Leads to Handcuffs

A man who drove the morning of Sept. 6 in the 23 Mile Road area with a defective seat belt wound up in handcuffs, according to police.

Police pulled over the unidentified man after noticing his sagging seat belt and soon learned of an outstanding warrant in his name for a Sterling Heights retail fraud. He was taken to the township police station for the warrant, driving on a suspended license and having a defective seat belt, police said.

He posted the $100 bond for his release.

Magazine Salesman Suspected of Fraud

A township resident reported that a seemingly shady salesman stopped by her house the afternoon of Sept. 1, police said.

The salesman told her that proceeds of magazine purchases would benefit military personnel. Once the woman was convinced to write a check for $59 and was given a receipt for the payment, she researched the company's record on Better Business Bureau. She learned of several fraud complaints and promptly stopped payment of her check and closed her checking account, police said.
