Computer scam strikes Chesterfield resident

A township resident told police he was the target of a computer repair con that cost him more than $200, according to a March crime report.

A caller representing a business named Windows Software Company initially contacted the man last month. When asked whether his computer was working properly, the resident mentioned problems with viruses. The caller then offered to fix the problem for a $135 warranty, said.

Within the next week, the township resident received up to seven more calls from the so-called company, telling him his hard disk drive had been corrupted and he needed to pay another $100 to have it fixed. The resident sent both payments to an unknown destination in India via Western Union, police said.

Attempts to receive a refund from the company afterward were unsuccessful and, on one occasion, someone identifying himself as a Window Software Company spokesperson told him to "f--- off," the report stated.
