5 Arrested in Drug House Raid

Five men were nabbed in a late Tuesday night Chesterfield Township police raid in which a detective was injured by a pit bull.

Chesterfield Township police nabbed five men and seized a cache of weapons and marijuana while executing a search warrant earlier this week, police said Thursday.

During the Tuesday night raid at the 50000 block of Degas in the Hometown Chesterfield mobile home subdivision near Fairchild and 23 Mile, a police officer was attacked by a pit bull on the premises, police said.

According to investigators, at approximately 10:30 p.m., township detectives went to the home to execute a felony warrant for 23-year-old Christopher Norris. Police expected Norris and drugs to be inside the residence. They found five men, including the wanted man, and two pit bulls upon entry.

, refusing to let go. The detective fought off the dog that soon went to attack another officer. That officer fended off the dog with a Taser gun and flashlight, but it soon charged another detective who fired his gun at the animal and wounded it, police said.

The wounded detective--a veteran of nearly 20 years on the force--was treated for arm wounds at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center and released Wednesday to continue recovery at home, police said.

Officers at the scene released the pit bulls to animal control workers.

Norris was arraigned in 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore on charges of operating a drug house, possession of marijuana and purchase of an unlicensed pistol. He was held in lieu of a $25,000 bond and could face more than three years in prison if convicted.

Police said four other men also face charges:

  • Derek Hasty, 21, of Chesterfield, faces a five-year felony charge of possession of a short-barreled shotgun and one-year misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession. Bond was set for $15,000.
  • Robert Moore, 23, of Chesterfield, had an outstanding felony warrant in Detroit for delivery of ecstasy and, in this case, has been charged with marijuana possession. Moore was turned over to Detroit authorities.
  • Jvon Powers, 19, of Detroit, faces a marijuana possession charge. Bond was set at $3,000.
  • Joseph Cosio, 19, of Chesterfield, faces a marijuana possession. Cosio was charged but released from custody.

Police began investigating the home after receiving anonymous tips about suspicious activity, including a high volume of traffic, Detective Sgt. Deron Myers said.

Myers said the department has previously seen drug houses in the community, but not in any one particular section.

"These places are isolated," he said Thursday. "They're out there and, when we become aware of them, we don't accept it and we take action."
