Longtime Lieutenant Honored in Chesterfield

Retired police Lt. Dave Marker served the township for 33 years.

Chesterfield Township officials and the family of a longtime police lieutenant did what many criminals could not over the years: Pull a fast one on Dave Marker.

Members of the police department and Marker's family gathered Monday night at the board of trustees meeting. At the beginning of the session, the board presented a resolution that honored the retired officer's 33 years of service. In order to keep the occasion secret, Marker was told to be there for another reason.

As Supervisor Michael Lovelock called him up to the lectern, Marker told him, "I thought I was here for an award for you."

The crowd, including several members of the police force, cheered his accomplishments, beginning in 1977 when Marker joined the township department after leaving the Detroit Police Department.

Marker started as a part-time officer, soon rising through the ranks as corporal, sergeant and lieutenant. He served as interim police chief three times from 2001-06. His retirement began several months ago.

"His dedication, commitment and loyalty has brought much joy to him," the resolution states. "He loved this department and everyone respected him."

Township police detective Scott Blackwell thanked Marker on behalf of the department. Community members, as well as Marker's loved ones, celebrated with cake in a nearby room.
