Macomb Homeless Coalition Reaches Out to Chesterfield Fire Victims

The agency is assessing the needs of Georgetown Apartments tenants affected by the fire. Chesterfield Township fire officials say the cause appears to be electrical.

The Macomb Homeless Coalition, an umbrella group that provides shelter and support services throughout the county, is trying to track down residents to lend a hand.

Roughly 50 to 70 tenants lost their homes last week in what Chesterfield Township fire officials said Monday they suspect was an electrical fire. The complex's insurance company is conducting its own investigation as well.

On Monday, the coalition prepared for its second visit to the complex at 23 Mile near Gratiot in an attempt to talk to those affected by the fire and determine their needs. The coalition went out the day after the fire and talked to about 20 displaced tenants.

"We're really sensitive to those situations where folks all of a sudden find themselves on the streets or potentially on the street," Macomb Homeless Coalition Director Chuck O'Brien said.

O'Brien said they are interested in setting up a fund for financial contributions and a public donation drop-off for items, such as furniture and household needs, in the community for the victims. The coalition also can direct victims to the proper places to receive emergency shelter, clothing and food.

The biggest challenge, though, is finding people who fanned out after the fire to stay with friends or family.

"It is hard to engage residents after the fact to get a clear picture of who needs what," he said.

More information on a fund or drop-off center for items is expected soon. Check back with Patch for details as they are made available.

A separate organized by township police and set for Aug. 31 at with proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross, is also expected to help Georgetown victims.

According to the Macomb Homeless Coalition, a Point in Time Count on Jan. 28, 2009 of homeless individuals and families in Macomb County found 1,176 people in shelters, vehicles, cars and on the street. More than 160 of those individuals counted were children. That result of that head count was higher than the one in 2007, when 1,142 people were counted, and in 2005, when 947 were counted.
