Newborn Found Abandoned on Porch, Police Search for Mother

Michigan's Safe Delivery of Newborns law allows parents to leave newborns they aren't prepared to care for with employees inside hospitals and police and fire stations within 72 hours of birth.

A baby abandoned on the porch of a Port Huron house is hospitalized and doing well as police search for information about the newborn’s mother.

A neighbor in the 1200 block of 11th Street discovered the infant around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, The Times Herald reports. The woman’s dog alerted her to the infant,  a boy, who had been wrapped in a towel and placed in a lawn chair.

The baby will remain at the Port Huron Hospital for several days and then be released to Children’s Protective Services.
