Police Blotter: Flip-Flops Clad Driver Can't Stand Sobriety Test

The following arrest information was supplied by New Baltimore police. It does not indicate convictions.

Suspected Drunken Driver Flops Field Sobriety Test

A 23-year-old woman was arrested at approximately 2:50 a.m. June 19 on suspicion of drunken driving after she hit a curb multiple times in the Green and Maria area, police said.

A police officer spotted the woman's 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer leaving the Willow Creek subdivision. The officer attempted to pull her over, but the SUV proceeded to travel about 10 miles above the 35 mph-zone in the curb lane and strike a curb several times, according to police.

After smelling alcohol, police asked the driver if she had been drinking. She admitted to consuming four to five beers before getting behind the wheel. Among the field sobriety tests she failed was standing with one leg lifted on the pavement. Clad in flip-flops, she had to put her foot down more than three times to gain balance, police said.

Chesterfield Township police administered a Breathalyzer about an hour after the arrest while she was in the township's holding cell. The test resulted in 0.18 blood-alcohol level—more than twice the state's legal limit for driving. The woman was transported to Macomb County Jail, where she was held in lieu of a $300 cash bond after a 12-hour hold, police said.
