Investigators said after the crash that they were searching for the driver of the dark-colored SUV that fled around 1:45 a.m. after the woman was struck and dragged in an apartment complex parking lot at 35000 block of 23 Mile next to the 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore.

The driver was described by police as a white man in his early 20s whose passenger was a white female in her late teens. The SUV had been seen heading down westbound 23 Mile toward Interstate 94. It was suspected to have minor passenger side because the victim potentially was leaning into the window before the accident, police said.

“Based on the information that we received so far, we are suspecting that illegal narcotics may have been a contributing factor to this incident," New Baltimore Police Chief Tim Wiley told Patch Thursday.

Police interviewed several witnesses at the scene and placed an individual, who was not involved in the crash, under arrest for an outstanding warrant for dangerous drugs, Wiley said.

The victim was taken by MedStar to McLaren Macomb Hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition.
