Shooting At Mount Clemens Fireworks Over Sunglasses

An 18-year-old Warren man was arrested Friday night after a shooting at the Stars and Stripes Festival in downtown Mount Clemens.

A confrontation over Cartier sunglasses turned violent Friday night at the popular in downtown Mount Clemens, police said.

As thousands of people left the annual fireworks display around 10:35 p.m., an 18-year-old Warren man shot a 19-year-old Detroit man in the leg on Market Street, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said Saturday.

"There was a confrontation between two males," Wickersham said. "The suspect took the glasses off the head of the victim."

When the victim went to get his glasses back, the suspect "pulls out a gun and shoots him in the leg," he said.

The suspect then dropped the gun and fled. Nearby deputies, who were on hand for the event, apprehended him and retrieved the weapon. Many fireworks attendees witnessed the shooting, the sheriff said.

Police do not believe the two men knew each other before the incident.

The Warren man is being lodged in Macomb County Jail, where he will be given interim bond Sunday. He is expected to be arraigned on felony charges Monday. The Sheriff's Office said it is seeking attempted murder, armed robbery and felony firearm charges from the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. It was not determined by Saturday morning if those charges would be authorized for this case.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.

The shooting took place as an estimated 50,000 people were in the city's downtown for the multi-day festival, Wickersham said.

"People will ask if it's still safe to come downtown and we say 'yes.' This happened in the presence of many law enforcement officers and it still didn't deter him," he said.

"People will ask if it's still safe to come downtown and we say 'yes.' This happened in the presence of many law enforcement officers and it still didn't deter him," he said. ARE YOU SERIOUS??!?!?!?! THAT SEEMS TO BE THE DEFINITION OF UNSAFE!!!!!!!!!

Both idiots. why would any person feel the need to wear expensive sunglasses to a nighttime event inviting something like this to happen. And the mentality where someone would shoot another person over sunglasses, mind boggling.

I thought the same thing when I read that quote...

I will never go down there again! This happened less then 20 feet away from me and my family. What if it hit a child? Would you still say its safe to come down and bring your children! The crowds were out of control! People were pushing an yelling trying to squeeze thousands of people thru a 10foot wide tent wheelchairs strollers and all. People were doing drugs ontop of the parking structure. I will never bring my family back again!

You should be able to walk down the street without a care in the world. Unfortunately this isn't the 1700's its crazy unsafe out there folks and its time to take control and do something about it it seems like its every man for themselves! Why do you think gun sales are at record highs . People are scared !!!

Ron, maybe this person wearing the sunglasses had been downtown all day? I wouldn't think to run back to my car to put the glasses away just because the sun went down.

1700's? Really?

Douglas said it right!! And boy do I agree!! I feel as a society we do NOT punish these IDIOTS enough. This is a example where the death penalty should be brought back. The people that do stuff like this might get jail time and guess what we pay for them to be in jail. This was attempted MURDER and with that they should be executed. Yes executed. For all you people that think that is too harsh I bet you would not think that way if your son or daughter was killed by someone that has NO REGARD for human life as these animals do. Maybe they do not mind going to jail heck It could turn out to be a family reunion for them.

Sounds like a bunch up uppity white people with no education. Feel free to move somewhere without crime.
Richard June 30, 2012 at 07:33 PM
And you just showed how educated you are Shaun. What an idiotic statement!

And this is the reason why a lot of these events become "Pay" to get in. It's sad, but it deters things like this from happening. I haven't gone to Mt. Clemens due to these reasons... How would I know that I'm not going to get stuck in the middle of a fight with my child, and getting hurt? One of my friends was sprayed with Pepper Spray when she went to the Hoe Down a couple years ago and she wasn't even involved in the fight that the police was trying to break up.

for some reason I think this is a mistake somehow. If you read the sentence it doesn't make sense at all. .. because of the "and it still DIDN'T deter him. I am assuming the reporter forgot something in there.

last sentence doesn't make sense...

Altercations like this can, do and will continue to happen all over the world like this for the rest of our lives. There's nothing you can do to prevent it. The only thing you can do is try your best to keep yourself and your family safe, wether that means educating yourself on personal protection, taking a concealed weapons class and carrying a handgun for protection or simply stay home. Negligent people have proven that no public place or event is safe, no matter how many law enforcement officers are present. I'm 26 years old, I've taken self defense classes, I carry a concealed weapon for the safety of myself and my family due to an active lifestyle and I will tell you that people/kids these days have "0" regard for authority. It's sad! When i was younger our biggest fear of doing something silly was being caught, wether it was an adult or a police officer! Anyway, everyone needs to worry about themselves and not do much of what you have no control over. Enjoy life! Do things with your families but be aware of your surroundings and always keep an escape plan handy.

Can I just take a second to point out that neither of these men were actually FROM Mt. Clemens? I go to this festival every year. It is always a good time. Clearly, they were not prepared for how large the crowds were. And I really hate to say it, but people can get shot anywhere. Its sad that it happened. A shame, really. And there are multiple shootings, stabbings, and fights at the Detroit fireworks every year too. Bottom line: people suck. Especially drunk people. If you don't want to take your children to potentially dangerous situations, probably you should stay out of events that have become essentially "Mardis Gras in Mt. Clemens"

i'm just happy my friend is ok thank god for answering me:-)
Bill from Macomb July 01, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Mt. Clemens has been making an effort to ban guns from all their events. Guns carried by good, law abiding citizens that is! Notice the criminal element ignores those laws. Surprise, surprise! People, you have to take responsibility for your own safety. Our local law enforcement, our government, can not, and will not protect you!

Also note that 10ft gate everyone was pushing through??? You can bet next year its 4ft wide with metal detectors. Thanks to these scum bags. I would have loved to witness this and run down the punk that shot him. Its really fustrating to me to here things like this. 50.000 ppl and no one to help. Whatever happen to patriotism and everone helping each other in such a time of need. All I here on here is we need to do this we need to do that. Where the hell were you ppl making all tjese acusations when the trigger was pulled. Ran like a bunch a school girls. Get a grip ppl
Mike Hunt July 02, 2012 at 02:49 AM
Now you know why I carry a gun everywhere I go.
Mike Hunt July 02, 2012 at 02:51 AM
You must be kidding?!?!? Why must I alter my lawful behavior because of what a criminal wants to do?!?!? Just because you like to dress in rags doesn't mean the rest of society has to.
Dagmar VanSlyke July 03, 2012 at 01:41 PM
I wouldn't "blame" anyone for not jumping in there and "helping". The kid was carrying a gun after all. Ok, there might be some crazy ppl like you and I out there that would have done something silly like that, but why risk even more peoples health? And who knows, if he would have pulled that trigger again, the bullet might have been fatal.
Karen July 03, 2012 at 07:43 PM
I agree with you Richard!!!
Dennis July 03, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Dagmar, the shooter dropped the gun immediately after the shot and fled on foot.
