Electronic Sign Aims to Curb Speeding in New Baltimore

The speed measuring awareness trailer will be positioned along streets with frequent speeders.

New Baltimore drivers will soon notice an electronic sign that posts their speed as they travel down main or side streets.

The newly purchased Speed Measuring Awareness Trailer, also known as a SMART sign, was bought from Huntington Woods police at auction for $600 and decorated for local police for about another $400. Similar trailers that are brand new are valued at approximately $10,000, according to New Baltimore Police Chief Tim Wiley.

"The whole purpose of it is to get voluntary speed enforcement cooperation," Wiley said. "More or less we're just trying to use it as an educational tool."

The sign will be positioned on some of the streets that have frequent speeders, including Jefferson, St. Clair Drive and Ridge Road. But, police also want the public's suggestions about what streets need it the most.

Tell us in the comments' section below: What streets in New Baltimore do you think have frequent speeders?

I'd like to see it placed on 23Mi.Rd. or as we call it,the "New Baltimore Autobahn"!

Excellent idea---St. Clair Drive (a 25 mph) residential street is used as a "thoroughfare" by most to get to and from the high school. It was never designed to be a thoroughfare--homes and children are too close to the street-- and the volume of traffic is much too much---This is a great idea in this looming budget situation where cadets hours just had to be cut due to Obamacare.

Huntley Ave is another street where there is frequent speeding and running of stop signs.

I would love to see it on Ashley steet, between Green street and Will Lee. The speed limit is 25mph not 45. Doesn't matter what time of the day no one goes the speed posted. I worry about my kids walking to school or outside playing in the front of yard. I could call daily about the traffic. You would think that the police would patrol that area closely because of the schools. The police come out and sit for half hour and then you don't see them again for weeks. If they would make themself known and that if you speed you will get a ticket!! Then maybe people would think twice about racing down the street before someone gets hurt.
