Readers meet the main character, Jack, as he is in the final stages of a terminal illness. The family is suddenly grief-stricken over the tragic death of his wife and, just when you think things could not get any worse, the reader is taken in another direction. Readers will identify with and cheer on Jack from beginning to end.

Readers will get a kick out of the people of Avalon as they see what happens when a mysterious gift of starter bread batter shows up at the homes of many town folk and discover how the smallest gift can affect the people in many different ways. The residents, Julie, Hannah, Mark, Madeline, Connie and others, deal with their unexpected gift of friendship that comes with different emotions.

State of Wonder by Anne Patchett

This book is a dark horse that really takes you by surprise as readers are drawn into the story of Marina. The pharmaceutical researcher is  suddenly called to the Amazon to finish her mentor’s research on a new wonder drug after her colleague meets with an untimely death. This book breaches many interesting topics from ethical medical research to unconventional tribal practices. It is truly a dark horse that readers will talk about for months to come.

The Watery Part of the World by Michael Parker

This is a wonderful piece of fiction that tells the story of a woman of wealthy and privilege named Theodosia. She is sailing off the coast of the Carolinas in the 1800s when her ship is attacked by pirates and she is left for dead on a nearby island. Her story is interwoven with that of Maggie and Whaley, two elderly sisters living on the island in the 1970s. Readers will want to skip ahead of the alternating chapters as they become engrossed in the juxtaposition of the two stories.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

A mysterious island, an abandoned orphanage and a strange collection of photographs await readers in this tale. Intended for a teen audience, but suitable for readers of all ages, this book has twists and turns that will delight readers as they follow Jacob to a remote Welsh island where his grandfather grew up. This is worth the read and will satisfy adults and teens alike.

No matter what your appetite, stop by this June and grab one of the many literary treats that await your summer reading cravings.
