The man who hit the car told police he stopped at the red light, turned around to look at his 18-month-old child and accidentally took his foot off the brake. The officer, however, noticed the man slurred his speech, had small pupils and seemed off balance, police said.

The man was administered, and subsequently failed, field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated and child endangerment. He was then lodged in Macomb County Jail. The infant was placed in the mother's care, police said.

Caught in Act, Scrap Thieves Return Goods

A watchful neighbor stopped would-be thieves as they tried hauling scrap May 6 from an abandoned farm at 26 Mile and Burdon, Chesterfield Township police said.

When police responded to the breaking and entering report, they found two men in a tan Dodge Dakota on New Haven Road. The men stated they were stealing metal from the farm, but they returned the material after a neighbor confronted them, police said.

An officer went to the farm and confirmed the metal was there. The men were warned not to return to the property.

Driver Uses Phone to Help Nab Hit-and-Run Suspect

A woman, whose car was rammed on I-94 north of 23 Mile, helped police catch the fleeing suspect by taking a picture with her phone, Chesterfield Township police said.

At about 8 p.m. May 7, the woman reported driving in the fast lane when a 2006 silver Ford sped up from behind her, hit the back of her car and pushed it into a skid to the median. When she and the other driver stopped, the victim noticed he seemed intoxicated, she told police.

As the man began to flee the scene, she quickly took out her phone to shoot a picture of him and got down his license plate number. Meanwhile, a witness followed the fleeing driver to a home near 26 Mile. Using information from the victim and witness, police found the vehicle and had it towed.

The investigation is ongoing.
